Fernanda Ghi and Guillermo
Merlo are undeniably one of the most prominent tango couples in the
world of Argentine tango. She was trained in classical ballet and modern
dance but became enthralled by the tango at age 13 while he came from
folkloric and was introduced to tango at age 12. Ten years later the
couple met and realized their destiny was to dance the tango together.
They
embarked on a professional career as teachers and performers and in 1998
the partnership was made stronger by their marriage. They were part of
the cast of the long running tango show "Forever tango" that was staged
in San Francisco, USA. And since then, they have received honors and
accolades around the globe.
Fernanda and Guillermo are renowned for their style, interpretation,
choreography, command of the stage and clear teaching technique. They
have a unique ability to convey to their audience and their students how
they themselves describe the tango - "as a dance with infinite
emotions." This is evident when one watches their performances as they
interpret tango pieces from the comic to ones of intense passion .
The most
unique feature in the teachings of Fernanda and Guillermo is their
approach to make students understand the three most important points of
the dance; the embrace, the axis without losing balance and the
individual role the man and woman have. They emphasize the importance of
using the torso more than the feet. As they say, "The torso is the motor
of this dance."
Fernanda and Guillermo now reside in Las Vegas, Nevada . They have
created a production company for their shows and have happily combined
their lives as husband and wife and as successful artists. While they
seem to show a picture of contentment with all the blessings they have
been receiving from above, still something is missing and this is what
Guillermo laments, " I want to have a baby and a dog." And Fernanda has
no qualms about his wishes. Expect in the coming months news that she
will have a date with the stork. Undoubtedly, everyone will be happy to
see this couple fulfill their dream to become proud parents.
