Ni Made
Masih |
Ni Made Masih or simply Made to
everyone is an institution in Bali’s "warung" business. A homegrown
talent who started a small eatery shop in Kuta in 1969, Made’s Warung is
now Bali’s preferred social venue for foreign and Indonesian local
residents and frequent visitors for nearly forty years. Now, Ni Made
Masih, who once adapted Indonesian food to the tastes of overland
travelers with such innovative dishes as fruit salad with rice pudding,
is embarking on a new mission, to reacquaint her now-affluent ,
cosmopolitan guests with real Balinese food.
"Many of our guests don’t even look
at the menu. They just say, "Made you decide. Give me something
different. So I am now offering Balinese food, this time with the best,
freshest ingredients and a new presentation. But it will still be
authentic Balinese food, spicy as we like it, not toned down for
tourists."
Married to Dutchman Peter
Steenbergen, they are blessed with two handsome sons who are now getting
more and more involved in the "warung" activities as both have the
business acumen to carry on with what she and Peter have started. And
since both are grown-up and are able to help them run the day –to-day
affairs of their two "warungs", Made has finally found time to indulge
herself into a passion. And what would it be but the Argentine tango.
She fell in love with the dance the minute she saw it and has since been
captivated by this art form. In fact, she just came back from a trip to
Buenos Aires recently, and learned more about tango from its’ origin.
Asked what she liked about the dance, she replied: "It is so dramatic
and full of emotions as it expresses so much feelings. But one thing I
like most is its’ got class. You do simple walks yet it makes you look
elegant."
Made’s now hosts the weekly
practica of Tango Bali Club every Tuesdays and Thursdays and from time
to time present a tango performance with milonga.
You haven’t been to Bali if you
haven’t been to Made’s.
